The MHFA course

‘It has made me definitely more aware of signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to deal with them. I will use this in daily life and work.'

‘I felt that the delivery and content were very good and couldn't be improved upon.'

‘I couldn't praise the course enough and will tell others about it and help raise awareness.'

Mental health problems can affect people at any time of life in different ways. They affect not only individuals and their families, but friends, work colleagues and employers too. Many people suffer a mental illness for a long time before they seek help.

MHFA England is proud to be in a position to offer two MHFA courses: Youth MHFA and MHFA. Please click here (pdf) here (text only) for details of what is covered in the MHFA course. The MHFA course is accredited by the Open College Network (3 credits at Level 3 on completion of a workbook).

An MHFA course will teach you to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a problem
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

Participants on MHFA courses come from a wide range of backgrounds, from family members wanting to gain more understanding of what a relative is going through, to employers, and to people who are likely to come into contact with those at risk of mental health problems, such as police, ambulance staff or community workers.

With both courses delivery is very flexible and may be delivered over two full days or spread out over a number of sessions. Maximum number of participants on the course is 16.

Please note: As part of the course, we'll be covering subjects that some people may find sensitive, including suicide. Instructors are sensitive to participants needs and responses and can be spoken to if necessary at any point during the course.
