Fancy being a Youth MHFA instructor?

We can teach you how to deliver your own courses independently. Whether you wish to deliver MHFA courses in your spare time, as part of your own training business or within your place of work, becoming an MHFA instructor can offer a great deal of personal and professional rewards, including earning an income. MHFA England is the only organisation in the country licensed to run MHFA Instructor Training programmes and is part of a global network of 23 countries.

People from all walks of life train to become MHFA instructors but they all have one thing in common – a desire to increase mental health awareness within our society and bring parity of esteem to mental and physical health. You will be helping to achieve the goal of training one in ten of the English population in MHFA skills.

What will I learn?

Our Instructor Training programmes will give you all the tools you need to run a successful MHFA course. Depending on your experience, interests and networks, you can train to be able to deliver one or all of the following:

  • Adult MHFA - a range of courses aimed at the adult population, in workplaces and community settings
  • Youth MHFA - a range of courses designed for people who live, work or interact with young people
  • Armed Forces MHFA – a course tailored for the Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, friends and family

How will I learn?

Instructor Training takes place over seven days and is usually spread out over six weeks. This allows you to become familiar with the material and reflect on your learning. You’ll have access to a mentor throughout who will be happy to help if you need any guidance along the way.

  • Days one-two: Experience the relevant MHFA course (Adult/Youth/Armed Forces) as delivered by our highly experienced National Trainers.
  • Day three: You'll hear from a variety of speakers from a mental health related background. These sessions could include discussions with people who have experienced mental health issues, a carer of someone with mental health issues, or someone from a medical background.
  • Days four-five: Your chance to deliver a session on a relevant topic followed by a 1:1 feedback session with your mentor.
  • Days six-seven: Deliver a section of the MHFA course, gain peer to peer feedback and another 1:1 session with your mentor.

You will be expected to do approximately 20 hours of your own study outside of the seven days, including time spent on preparing delivery materials for days four-five and six-seven. You will have one year of 1:1 support from your mentor as you get up and running as an independent MHFA instructor.

Following the seven days training, you'll be required to co-deliver two MHFA courses within a year to become an approved instructor. Instructors are only allowed to solo deliver courses once approved.
