“By empowering people to be their whole selves at work every day – without fear of judgement or consequence – people will feel psychologically safe.

It’s then when they can be their most creative and effective at work. Seeing others be themselves, will create a wave of organic individuality which fosters a diverse and thriving workforce.”

Matt Wilson, Employee Wellbeing and Engagement Advisor at Cambridgeshire County Council

My Whole Self aims to create workplace cultures where people have the safety and freedom to choose which parts of their identity they share at work.

Celebrate diversity, embrace inclusion

My Whole Self Day encourages workplaces to celebrate and embrace our diverse identities and experiences. It takes place on the second Tuesday in March, every year. In 2025 it falls on 11 March

We want organisations to empower employees to bring their whole self to work. That includes background, sexuality, religion, gender, health, and mental health. By bringing together diversity and inclusion with health and wellbeing, we can drive positive transformation in workplace mental health and performance.

When people feel psychologically safe, teams perform better, unlocking innovation and excellence.

At its core, psychological safety is about trust and respect. It means colleagues listen without judgment. Leaders model vulnerability. Policies demonstrate fairness and dignity for all. Teams thrive when all voices are encouraged to speak up with ideas, questions, or concerns without fear of embarrassment or retaliation.

New resource for 2025

To empower workplaces to better support and motivate their people, MHFA England has published a new, free resource - My Whole Self: My plan for working well.

It is a personal, proactive tool to help employees and managers identify what keeps them and their colleagues working well. The plan helps to create psychological safety, one of the key drivers of motivation, engagement and performance. By fostering psychologically safe workplace cultures, wellbeing, morale, and productivity will soar.

Introducing our new people manager training course

People managers play a crucial role in creating workplaces that allow people to be authentic and share their whole self. For almost 70% of people, their manager has more impact on their mental health than their therapist or their doctor – and it’s equal to their partner.

My Whole Self research over the years has consistently demonstrated the golden thread between people managers, psychological safety and productivity.

It’s crucial that people managers have the right tools and training to support their teams. That’s why we’ve developed a brand-new course for people managers, Supporting Team Mental Health and Performance.

Launching on 4 March 2025, our new course has been developed to equip managers with the confidence and skills to have effective conversations about mental health and performance. The course is designed to help people managers create thriving and mentally healthy teams that perform at their best.
