Given how much value managers deliver to organisations in building cultures that support wellbeing and performance, it is important that they have the tools, time, and training to do the job of managing well.
Teams that feel safe and connected work better together. Equipping your managers with the skills they need helps create environments where people are able to bring their whole self to work and gives them the confidence to start conversations about mental
health and signpost to support if needed.
We surveyed 2,000 managers to understand the challenges they face in helping support the wellbeing of their teams in more detail.
It found a third (33%) of managers were out of their depth supporting their team with mental health concerns. Over a quarter (29%) of managers said more support and training from their employer would help them to create a team where everyone feels they can bring their whole selves to work.

Developing your managers' confidence to have effective mental health conversations with their teams makes good business sense on many levels.
The evidence calls for desperately for action. Deloitte’s 2024 report (1)estimated that mental ill-health costs UK businesses £51 billion per year. The human impact can also be found evidenced in absenteeism, with the proportion of absences attributable to mental health conditions rising to 16% in 2020.
Data from The Workforce Institute at UKG (2) shows that for almost 70% of people, their manager has more impact on their mental health than their therapist or their doctor – and it’s equal to their partner.
With a relatively modest investment in an effective wellbeing strategy, organisations can make a radical change to their workplace culture and profits. The same Deloitte report shows that For every £1 spent on workforce mental health, employers gain about £4.70 in increased productivity.
