MHFA England® has begun a programme of Mental Health First Aid training for MP constituencies across England. Given the range and variety of people and issues that MP’s staff face each day, it’s vital they can support the mental health of their colleagues and constituents effectively. The training was expertly delivered by experienced MHFA Instructor Member, Kate Golding.

The course gives people the skills to spot the signs of poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, and the knowledge to signpost to support. Feedback from attendees highlighted the impact of the training, with many reporting increased confidence in addressing mental health concerns within their roles.

One participant shared,

“This training has given me the tools to approach conversations about mental health in a more structured and effective way. Working in an MP’s office, we often encounter constituents facing crises, and having these skills is invaluable.”

Another attendee noted,

“I now feel better equipped to support both my colleagues and the public, and I hope more parliamentary staff have the opportunity to take this training.”

And another said:

“I think that this is training that everyone in a public facing role, and someone in every workplace, should have so that they are better able to give the necessary support to people’s mental health journey.”

As frontline representatives dealing with a wide range of concerns, from housing and benefits to personal crises, MP office teams frequently encounter constituents in distress. Training in mental health first aid will enable staff to provide immediate support to constituents and colleagues, while maintaining their own wellbeing.

With MPs and their teams playing such a critical role in public service, initiatives like this MHFA® training programme are essential in creating a nation where everybody’s mental health matters and stigma is reduced.

We delivered the training to 10 constituencies, including:

  • Bexley Heath and Crayford

  • Bristol North West

  • Crewe and Nantwich

  • North Durham

  • Preston

  • Sherwood Forrest

  • South Derbyshire

  • Stretford and Urnston
