Work Experience

Mat started his working career in finance the city of London working alongside derivative brokers and then moving into the world of compliance. Realising this was not for him Matthew went back to collage to study business and moved into the hospitality trade. Whilst in the hospitality trade Mat gained his passion for training people and has been lucky enough to travel the country and even into Europe to open restaurants. Hospitality gave way to retail where Mat has spent the last 7 years working for one of the countries largest ‘big box’ retails within the project management teams delivering change into a portfolio of around 300 stores.

As part of his further education Mat studied H&S and whilst working toward earning himself a NEBOSH Diploma his Mental health was challenged and he quickly realised that there is plenty of employer resource and legislation out there to look after the physical well-being of a person but very little putting an emphasis on Mental wellbeing. This then lead Mat to investigate becoming a MHFAider and began his journey to creating Mindset his training consultant and, most recently, Mindset Sport the free wellbeing resource for grass roots sports clubs.

Matthew also has lived experience of mental health illness having been diagnosed with Depression and GAD in his early twenties.

Alongside his qualification as a MHFA England instructor Mat is also an associate instructor for Mind operating from their Hammersmith and Fulham office on the ‘Well at work’ project and has undertaken training in ISO45003 and is able to advise companies on setting up to become compliant and achieve the required standard

Outside of work Mat lives in Surrey with his wife, two step kids, two dog, four cats, 2 rabbits and a Hamster. He is a keen rugby player ( when he is not broken) and has also dabbled with coaching which is why Mindset Sport was created.
Mat believes companies should to adopt a ‘top down’ approach to mental health, as we already have with physical safety. With prevention at the top rather then starting at management of a crisis.

Qualifications

Amazing course! Matt was friendly and supportive throughout and facilitated some great conversations!

Excellent course, I think this should be a mandatory course for all Line Managers and HR and anyone in a senior role responsible for dealing with people. I will be recommending this to our CEO for Managers.

Great! I want to keep learning now!

Matt was personable and flexible in his approach to the course. It is quite rare to find a trainer that opens up and has relatable examples and experiences in these types of situations - which made the group feel comfortable to share as well. Overall, good experience and thank you Matt again for your warm and engaging delivery!

Matthew was great and made people very comfortable in the sessions. This made for lots of open conversations which helped with the discussions around the topics. He was very clear and on time for all sessions and the course ran exactly on time. I would definitely recommend the course and Matthew as the instructor.

The course was great, well structure, great activities, homework wasn't too difficult, plenty of time between considering the subject is difficult, the instructor is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Very good instructor and group. Very good for conversation and I now feel equipped in supporting those in need. I will be recommending this course to future colleagues.
