We know that improving workplace mental health remains one of the biggest positive changes your organisation can make for your people, and your bottom line. We also know that it can be difficult to know where to start or where to make changes.

New research from MHFA England® shows 59% of employees do not regularly feel joy and satisfaction at work. 1 in 5 (22%) workers feel their sense of purpose, satisfaction, and joy at work has decreased since the pandemic.

Poor mental health can affect anyone at any time and in different ways. MHFA England’s research, among 2,000 employees, found that a third often feel unhappy, stressed, or worried in the workplace.

Concerningly, despite this, almost half of workers say they have never had a wellbeing check-in from their employer. The data reveals that since 2021, almost double the number of employees report that their workplace failed to check in on their wellbeing in the past year (48% in 2023, matching 2022 figures and up from 25% in 2021).

Feeling safe and able to be our whole selves at work is important to wellbeing, joy, and satisfaction. An environment that supports people to be their whole self helps people feel more engaged, think more boldly, and work more effectively together.

Wellbeing consultancy with IVC Evidensia
IVC Evidensia are a global leader in veterinary care, investing in people, premises, and processes to deliver outstanding care in around 2,500 locations across 20 countries.

Their UK team wanted to review their process to build a thriving, healthy workplace, without compromising their own culture. The team reflected:

“We went through a lengthy process with the team at MHFA England so they could completely understand our business and what we were looking to get from the programme.

“We needed help to engage with our employees to understand what they were feeling. With over 14,000 staff across the UK, we would have struggled, firstly to reach them and secondly to ask the right questions. Our key stakeholders met with our dedicated consultant who then surveyed our employees for feedback. This was followed up with a playbook of wellbeing recommendations.

“Since then, we have implemented training for staff and a large majority of practice leaders are now trained as Mental Health First Aiders. Quarterly wellbeing symposiums now take place, relevant and up to date wellbeing content has been added to our intranet, and pocket cards have been created with top tips for employees.

“We have noticed a shift in culture, our employees are now more open about their mental health, and it is helping to remove the stigma.

“We were given so much support on our wellbeing journey and would recommend the process to other organisations.”
