Personal Details

I have been promoting mental and physical health for many years. A full career in the British Army in various roles including front line combat, human intelligence, personnel (HR), physical training, primary healthcare and health and wellbeing has given me valuable experience and perspective.

I have a keen interest in education and training in suicide prevention

I promote equality, diversity and inclusion, I believe we all have the right to live life in our own way as long as it does not have a detrimental impact on others.

Work Experience

I am a MHFA Adult Trainer for MHFA England and also a MOD TRIM Coordinator. I endeavour to make all my courses informative but also fun.

I have taught within all major sectors including NHS, IT, Police, Armed Forces, Prison Staff, Education, Religious groups , Construction, World Class Sport, Legal and Media and Health.

I commit 4 hours per week as a Crisis Volunteer, answering texts from people in crisis, bringing them from a hot moment to a cool calm one through active listening, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning. Shout 85258 is a free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope. I have found the experience from this work to be hugely valuable when instructing on MHFA courses.

MHFA Adult Instructor with exemplary feedback:

"Ian was a very respectful and strong instructor who has a great method in his approach to introducing the course, and in how he presents the material to aid learning. His level of experience clearly shows and is admirable and very much commendable. I truly have so much respect for individuals like Ian who responsibly offer training in this very complex but serious field, and who are also actively involved in helping improve and support people’s lives daily. Thank you very much and I offer my sincere wishes of courage, strength and knowledge to continue this great great work." 12 Sep 2022.

"Ian was really warm, friendly and encouraging, and great at meeting the needs of the group as a whole, despite their varying experience. I also thought the practice runs were hugely beneficial in addition to learning the material."2023

"I thought the course was very good and a lovely supportive environment for people to share. I thought Ian was an amazing host and very knowledgeable on the area. I would highly recommend this course to everyone. I had some prior knowledge on MH and how to discuss things but this course has enhanced my skills and given me more confidence." 2023

"It was fantastic. It taught me so much not only about how to help people with mental health issues but also how to communicate with everyone. As an autistic person this has been so important for me. I met lots of passionate people. It made me realise I was not alone and there were others who wanted to make the world a better place just like me. I will be recommending to everyone." 2023
