National Self Care Week is an annual national awareness week that focuses on embedding support for self-care across communities, families, and generations. Lewis McIntosh, Communications, Marketing, and Membership Executive at MHFA England® reflects on what self-care is and why it matters.
As we immerse ourselves in National Self Care Week, taking place from Monday 13 November to Sunday 19 November 2023, we want to delve into the transformative impact of self-care on our minds and bodies.
National Self Care Week amplifies the importance of support for self-care across diverse communities. This year’s theme, ‘Mind and Body,’ reminds us of the profound connection between our mental and physical wellbeing.
Self-care is more than a practice. It’s a deliberate journey to enhance our health. It involves recognising our needs, prioritising wellbeing, and taking proactive steps to meet those needs.
In a country where 84% believe a greater focus on self-care is vital [1], now is the moment to grasp its benefits and embed it into our lives during and beyond National Self Care Week.
The theme this year underscores the intricate relationship between mental and physical health.
Wellbeing can flourish when we address both aspects. A healthy mind nurtures a healthy body, and vice versa.
1. Nurture your mind
Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine. Whether it is meditation, deep breathing exercises, or a few moments in nature. Take a moment to centre your thoughts amidst day-to-day life.
2. Move your body
Physical activity isn’t just about fitness. It’s also a powerful tool for mental wellbeing. Find an activity you enjoy, such as swimming, yoga, or dance. Let movement be your medicine.
3. Prioritise sleep
Quality sleep is a cornerstone of wellbeing. Create a soothing bedtime routine, limit your screen time before sleep, and ensure your sleep environment is conducive to good rest. Click here for more on healthy sleep tips.
4. Healthy nutrition
Fuel your body with nutritious food. A balanced diet impacts our bodies and also has benefits for mood and cognitive function.
5. Set boundaries
Learn to say no when you need to. Establishing healthy boundaries safeguards your energy and helps tackle burnout.
In life’s hustle and bustle, self-care often takes a backseat.
Yet, it’s a vital component for a fulfilling and balanced life. Some of its benefits include the following:
Making time for self-care can often feel like an uphill task. It doesn’t always have to be lengthy routines or grand gestures. It could be about embracing small, intentional breaks – whether it’s for a deep breath or a warm cup of tea.
Discover what works for you on your personal journey, and experiment until you find something you resonate with.
Share your experiences with loved ones to create supportive communities that inspire each other to prioritise wellbeing. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on building consistent, achievable habits.
Even dedicating a few minutes daily can turn into a meaningful routine. By prioritising self-care with manageable steps, you can witness the positive impact on your overall wellbeing.
As the national authority on mental health first aid, we believe self-care is a fundamental pillar of wellbeing. It is a central component of our Mental Health First Aid training.
