MHFA England contributes to Government mental health strategy
MHFA England® has responded to the Government’s mental health strategy call for evidence ahead of the 10 July deadline. This new cross-government strategy will shape the future of mental health support for a generation.
Our submission highlights the role employers play as partners in preventing poor mental health, and the importance of a three-pathway framework of support – for life stresses, burnout, and worsening mental health conditions – and show how early, appropriate support reduces the burden on mental health services. We also make the case for mandating mental health first aid in the workplace, and show the need for a nationwide framework of standards. Throughout, we’re clear that training is one part of a broader, whole-organisation approach – not a standalone fix.
MHFA England’s submission is backed by data from our MHFAider Support App®. In 2025 alone, 52,000 interactions were logged through the app. Of those interactions, 40% related to life events, 25% to workplace stress, and 33% to a worsening diagnosed condition. This data shows the important role MHFAiders play in supporting people who are struggling with their mental health, but who don’t show up in NHS clinical data.
Sarah McIntosh, Chief Executive of MHFA England and the Association of Mental Health First Aiders®, said:
“The evidence is clear. Workplaces are already playing a critical role in reducing poor mental health. The more than a million people we’ve trained are there, when it matters, ready to have life-changing conversations and signpost to support.”
“We share the Government’s vision for a mentally healthy nation. And we know from our work with over 20,000 organisations, that prevention in the workplace is where it starts.”
